Old Royal Naval College DETAILS Address: King William Walk, London , SE10 9NN Nearest Tube: Cutty Sark Phone: 020 8269 4747 Last updated: 05 Jun 2014 The Old Royal Naval College is the architectural centrepiece of Maritime Greenwich,[1] a World Heritage Site in Greenwich, London, described by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) as being of "outstanding universal value" and reckoned to be the "finest and most dramatically sited architectural and landscape ensemble in the British Isles".[2] The site is managed by the Greenwich Foundation for the Old Royal Naval College (Foundation), set up in July 1998 as a Registered Charity to "look after these magnificent buildings and their grounds for the benefit of the nation". The grounds and some of its buildings are open to visitors. The buildings were originally constructed to serve as the Royal Hospital for Seamen at Greenwich, now generally known as Greenwich Hospital, which was designed by Christopher Wren, and built between 1696 and 1712. The hospital closed in 1869. Between 1873 and 1998 it was the Royal Naval College, Greenwich. The ORNC is a five minute walk from the station. The DLR provides public transport links from London Bank (Central, Northern and Waterloo and City lines), Monument (District and Circle line), Canary Wharf (Jubilee line), Tower Gateway, Lewisham, Stratford and Limehouse. By London Underground Take the Jubilee Line to Canary Wharf and change to the Docklands Light Railway. You can also take the Jubilee Line to North Greenwich (the O2) and then take either bus 188 or 129 which stops on Romney Road. Greenwich station is located in Zone 2 and 3 and is a 12 minute walk away from the ORNC. Turn left when you leave Greenwich station to head for the town centre. You can also take the DLR from the station to Cutty Sark for Maritime Greenwich (see By DLR).
